Show dont tell

Small pieces of rocks, grass and stones stuck in me isn’t such a pleasant feeling. The pain being inflicted on my body hurts badly. Stepping on poop smells DISGUSTING and UNCOMFORTABLE!!! At this point I couldn’t bare to breathe with the unbearable scents surrounding me. Falling into a nasty, smelly, puddle made me soaked and smelly!! I’m starting to think that my only source of food is the stale bubblegum stuck to the floor with each step my owner took on them. Gross…  Does my owner even have eyes? Each step my owner took was on one of the most disgusting parts on the ground (puddles, poop, bubble gum and rocks). I’m yearning for the day when I get brought back to the shoe store...

Written by | Nyjah and Chavda

This week during Writing Nyjah and I have been on show no tell. Our story was based on shoes that were about the 5 senses. As a peer we were pretending to be a peer of shoes that had those 5 senses. During this challenge, LS2 were given a challenge to sit back to back with our partner. In our peers we wrote 7 sentences or more. I found it really easy to do this because Nyjah and I had similar ideas for this topic.

Explanation : LGBTQ

LGBTQ
How do you feel about the LGBTQ commuinty? Nearly everyday humans question themselves about what they identify with. The meaning of LGBTQ is lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender. Q is for those who are questioning themselves, on what they identify with. Do you know the colours of their new flag?

RESPECT
Just imagine if you were LGBT, wouldn't you want respect from your family and friends? So why not show respect towards those who are LGBT? People in the 1990's - now, have gained a lo,t of respect for those who are lgbt. Showing them the respect they need will make them feel more self - confident.

EMPATHY
Did you know that over 11 million people in the world are LGBT? Being understanding (towards their feelings) and accepting (understanding how they feel) is showing Empathy. Example: understanding someone and sharing feelings with one another can lift a lot of weight off both of your guys shoulders.

TOLERANCE
Not much people today can show tolerance. There are two sides (disliking things and agreeing with things). In my opinion i think we should be showing tolerance to those people that are still figuring out their identify, which does that a lot of time.. We all have different opinions about things.

I have finally come to my conclusion. I talked about many things about the LGBTQ community, but If you were still wondering about the meaning of the LGBTQ colours on the flag is: Red means life, Orange means healing, Yellow means sunshine, Green means nature, Blue means harmony and Violet means spirit.

This week during Writing, LS2 (yr 7 and yr 8) have created a explanation of our choice that showed Respect, Empathy, Tolerance or something else of our choice.  I decided to go with LGBTQ for my explanation because it was really easy to go with Respect, Empathy and Tolerance. In the beginning we had 10 minutes of planning, 40 minutes of writing and a few minutes of drafting our work. The next day in the morning block we all had some time to proof read our writing.

Explanation: Should NZ ban plastic straws?

Do you think plastic straws are useful? Well I think it is easier to use a straw than to use no straw. Around the world, most people know that plastic straws harm sea creatures. People are thinking about banning them for good, but people like me disagree.

In 1870, plastic straws were created to benefit not only me, but everyone around the world. Plastic straws was created by John Wesley Hyatt. I am happy, glad and delightful about having plastic straws around the world including NZ. Have you ever had a drink at a fast food place without getting a straw? It is hard to drink a drink with no straw because it goes all over your face and it looks embarrassing in public. Almost everyone has experienced the feeling of disgust and embarrassment walking to the restroom covered in their drink because I too have been in that situation and trust me it doesn't feel or look good.
I believe plastic straws are very helpful for when we are in public, in the car and even at home. Why? Imagine drinking a can of Mountain Dew without a straw, you'd be stuck in an awkward position trying to force all the remaining liquid. You’d look ridiculous! But if we used a straw we not only finish are drink clean but we could also feel the relief of not looking crazy. Did you know paper straws become soggy and makes it difficult to drink your drink.

Paper straws contain polypropylene which is the same liquid as fuel that we use in our cars today. As we use paper straws it is not only hard to drink but also gets soggy and in most cases melts some polypropylene inside your drink. Even though it’s harmless don’t you think it’s disgusting knowing you’re drinking a liquid used in gas?

The reason why plastic straws are getting banned in most countries around the world, is because people aren’t recycling their straws. If people recycle their plastic straw’s their won’t be a problem to people in many countries. If you don’t recycle your plastic straw it goes to landfills, or even worse it pollutes our oceans which looks ugly to look at. The sad thing about having plastic straws is that people don’t recycle them. Did you know it takes 200 years for plastic straws to be decomposed? Which means most people living right now is not going to be alive at that time of year. Here is a tip from me: don't litter your straw, instead recycle straw. Would you prefer drinking drinks with a straw? If so, share my tip.

Point of View

This week for Inquiry Chavda and I have been using our researching skills to find out whether it’s necessary for plastic straws to be banned. In my opinion straws shouldn't be banned as it doesn't cause much problems then plastic bags. It helps us drink a drink instead of having it all over our face. Using this DLO we managed to find information/useful knowledge to back up not only our opinion but also to fill in facts for No/yes. A fact is useful information that is always correct . Option is not right or wrong as it is a emotional way to approach things.

Persuasive Speeches: Racism

LI: To write a speech that persuade others to think the way you do.

                                                                 Raicsm

Greetings everyone, I have felt passionate about a topic that has been spoken about for many years. Racism. In the past, black and white people didn’t get along, this was especially in places like the USA where what you could do or where you could go depended on the colour of your skin.

In September the 7th 1921, during the touring in Napier. New Zealand won 9-8. When this story was published, the manager says that he did not deny that his players had been upset because of the saying of the crowd.

On August the 28th in 1963, Martin Luther King Jr delivered his “I have a dream” speech, was a powerful speech that talks about racism, freedom, and american civil rights. Did you know that those 4 words is well known as a phrase in African American’s history.

In 1982, New Zealand first played South Africa. Although the All Blacks team had really good players some of them weren’t allowed to go because they were Maori like George NÄ“pia. 160,00 people signed a petition to have a white All Blacks team instead of having a mixed of colour team. Their slogan was called ‘no Maoris, no tour’.

Have you ever felt excluded because of your skin-colour? Well, we all have experienced it in some way. You may know Rosa Parks as the“first lady of civil rights”. Rosa Parks sat at the front of a city bus, refusing to give up her sit up to a caucasian male. It wasn’t fair how they were having separate sides of white and black people. Rosa put up a fight, but didn’t win. She was forced to get off, and was taken to jail because she kept on refusing to give up her seat to a white person, so then they arrested her. How would you feel if that happened to you?

This week we had our speech competition on Tuesday. On Monday we had a speech off between 7 people. Only 3 people from that 7 was able to present their speech at our school's speech competition. The 3 winners were Mele, Jack and Marieta. But before we presented our speeches we all chose a speech topic to present in front of the class or in a group. I decided to present my speech in a group because I wasn't that confident to show my speech to the class. The speech topic that I decided to go with was Racism because that is one of my favorite speech topics and because I was influence to do a racism speech.

Major Yuri Gagarin Animation

This week in reading we used our creative skills to create an animation or an ex planer movie about Yuri Gagarin, in groups. My group and I decided to create an animation. Before we created the animation, we planned it as a group. On a piece of paper we drew a S to include the information we wanted about Yuri Gagarin from the start to the finish. A fact about Yuri Gagarin is that he was the first cosmonaut to orbit earth in Vostok 1. After planning the animation, we started to create our animation, we chose a leader to tell us our job of creating our animation. We all decided that I was the right leader of our group. My group and I worked together as a team and helped each other to complete our animation. I think that everyone in my group had great create skills and are really talented in drawing digitally.

Information Report

Image result for king penguins

King penguins are 3 feet tall  and they’re the second tallest penguin alive. Did you know that king penguins swim underwater for about 20 minutes?

King penguins have orange spots (near the neck and near their ears). Males are slightly larger than females. King penguins kind of looks similar to a emperor penguin but an emperor penguin has a different size. The European explorers discovered king penguins thought that king penguins were the tallest specie alive. They are the brightest specie out of all penguins.

King penguins are carnivores. They love to eat (small fish, lantern fish and squid). Here's a shocking fact that humans don’t know (the mother gets the food while the dad looks after the chick). The mother uses their beak as a spoon to feed their chicks. They eat 13 pounds per day.

King penguins are warm blooded. They live in subanatracia on the northside of antarctica. In their island it has snow, water and it is really cold. Did you know that antarctica has 10 islands? Well I never knew that fact.

Did you know that king penguins are scared of a killer whale, leopard seal, skaus and an giant petrel. They travel in groups of 5 to 20 individuals.

I have finally came to my conclusion. I have written what their is diet, appearance, habitat and behaviour. Did you know that their scientific name is called  Aptenodytes patagonicus.

This week in writing we have being practising our information report writing skills. I have chosen to write about a king penguin. To do this practise whole information we used a text box that helped us write our information. We have a structure that we made up as a class called tips (title, introduction, paragraph and summary). I learnt that king penguins are 3 feet tall.

Stretching Sentences

This week in Writing we were all learning about stretching sentences. We made a DLO that explains what a stretching sentence means and showing an example. We use the 5 w's and H. We all got a choice of picking which character that we know that we could write about. I chose Dipper Pines because he loves going on adventures of finding who is the author of the 3 journals. We first started doing this when we were doing our 2 words 1 minute. We did some practising of how to make a stretching sentence.

Caring for the Planet/ Rubric Marking

Caring for the planet

Do you care for the planet? In once in a while people drop rubbish, most of these rubbish goes to the ocean.
Sea creatures sees the rubbish and thinks that the rubbish is a jelly fish so they eat it up.
This isn’t a good thing for them! Why? It can kill them!

How do you feel when plastic bags faded out? Everyone has a opinion about having or not having plastic bags.
I don't want plastic bags to be faded out because we got free plastic bags.
Before plastic bags were here in New Zealand many shopping places used brown bags.
These brown bags held our groceries. Brown bags are still around in some food places, but not in all!

Why should you reuse a single use bag? Using a single use bag helps the planet,
it helps held your grocery bags. Plastic bags faded away, since last year.
Now when people goes shopping they use: Countdown bags, Paknsave bags and their own bag.
Some people will disagree to reuse a single plastic bag, because they like to buy a new shopping bag even though
they have plenty at their home.I reuse a bag when I go shopping to save money!

1 billion shopping bags are used every year by 4 million people in New Zealand.
The government of New Zealand has given New Zealand  6 months that does not provide us with any plastic bags!
Other countries around the world, plastic bags were ban. Did you know that It will take 400 years to decompose plastic bags from
landfills?
That is a very long time to decompose.

I have finally come to my conclusion. I have gave my statements about why we should reuse a single use plastic bag,
how I felt and asking how you guys felt about plastic bags fading out and how many years it will take for plastic bags t
o decompose
from the ocean.

This week and last week I have worked together with Fui. Together we were checking each
other Explanation writing with the rubric. At the bottom we checked which level they are on
like: R1, R2 and R3. Fui got more than R4 for her rubric checking. We did 2 boxes one box
was the partner check and the top one was about themselves. Everyone in our class chose a
partner that was a year 7 or 8 and they got a choice of choosing one of the examples on the
rubric. Florence and I chose Colons because that was very easy to do.

In our Sketch Note you will find some main ideas about explanations. I did a drawing to show an example of a sketch note. We also did some speed dating with other peers outside on the deck in a line. Fui and I wrote a lot of ideas.

Why Do People Build Bridges

Why Do People Build Bridges?

Bridges are built for transportation, easy acces, and for boats to go under. They help us leave from point A to point B instead of: drowning, swimming and getting wet. It also allows a path way to be formed. Bridges were also made for a faster transport across rivers, lakes and the ocean.

Before vehicles and living things were built they had a punt to sit on, and a chain to pull that cost money. If you let go you get pulled back. Most people didn’t really by it so they swam. Most people made it and the others don’t. That is called a New Zealand disease. The meaning to a New Zealand disease is how people drown from getting across the water, and the water is deep or low.

As you may know bridges help a lot of people around the world. They have different shapes, materials and are in different places. A very well known bridge is the Golden Gate Bridge. It is very 2737 tall. There a different types of bridges that are built in different countries, like a suspension, truss, and an arch bridge.

Bridges used today, but bridges are built for transportation, easy acces, and for boats to go under. It helps us leave from point A to point B. It also gives us faster transportation.

This week and last week, I have being working on a explanation about Bridges. I used have 5 paragraphs including the conclusion and introduction. I have learnt a lot about bridges because I researched about bridges and types of bridges. I also added an example about the Golden Gate Bridges because that bridge is very well known in the world and in America.

Using Colons

Today we Illustrate a sentence from the google doc. One way to  use a colon in a piece of writing is when you are making a list. The reason why I chose to do Drama, Science Fiction and Mystery because I am a Mystery person in Writing. My favorite drawing to do was the Cookies because I love Cookies and they are very nice to eat.

What are sense verbs: Quiz

Today we played a quiz about verbs. We had try and answer the question by clicking on those words that are list that makes the sentence makes sense. I got 2 wrong so I changed it into the correct answer. It was very fun because I learnt how to make a sentence that made sense and what are sensory verbs. Also the reason why I chose the image because I love Cookies.

Last week I made a google document about Analogue clock. I made 3 paragraphs with a introduction, conclusion and 1 paragraph. I talked about Numerals, Roman Numerals, what is a analogue clock and Egypation Numerals. I learnt what were Egypation Numerals because they are symbols and they are not written in words or numbers.

Did you know that Numerals has over 2 types of Numerals?

How Wifi works

 How wifi works?

Wifi has a similar frequency to a microwave and also to a oven because it heats the dinner up. WIfi also gives information and is connected to online sites and social media’s. It is used for mobile devices because it is technology. It is also has games, images and apps that is used with wifi. It also allows people to video chat and talk with people online.  Some people doesn’t know that Wifi is light. The spectrum light is invisible to a human eye.

Spectrum  turns into color. It is group of different kinds of colors or a pattern and a rainbow.  Spectrum is on mobile devices and also is around places. You could create photos and drawings using color. If there wasn’t color you wouldn’t be able to see anything.  Radio waves are 5 things. As an example radio waves is like hearing the radio play in the car. Energy waves are basically the wifi.

The lower the frequency the slower the pulse. Energy waves can come through the mobile devices. An example if you take the bottom of the of the computer you will see the energy waves go through. Radio waves is like the same as the radio sound in the car. Also radio waves produces sound in mobile devices so that you can hear what the person is saying in a video. A binary code is like different kind of codes.

An example of a binary code is like a password that has little numbers. It also makes a number. Binary codes are a bunch of little codes that are bunched and make a whole number.  Binary codes can form a password. For an example 7937568 because those are numbers that are used for binary code. Wifi’s are very useful because it will give us information and it will also be very fun to use.

Wifi does have a similar  frequency to a microwave and also to a oven because its technology. Wifi really does connect to online sites because those online sites are used with wifi. Yes it's right that it is used for mobile devices because wifi and mobile devices are technology and if you don't have a technology device that means wifi can't be able to connect to it. Many people doesn't really know that wifi is light. Before wifi had started no one new  that much information.
Today for Writing I worked with Nyjah. Nyjah and I worked together to check our work with checklist. I have learnt a lot because I never knew the words and how to say it. It was pretty hard writing it because I never knew how to say the words.

Nice Work

Today for Writing we made a poem. The poem we did was called Nice work. The first thing I started off  with was my 5 words that means nice. The words I did was good, amusing, acceptable, pleasant and enjoyable. After that I did the phrase and the meaning. The lucky last thing I did was my poem. In the poem we had to change the word nice to a different word and all of the words that was the meaning to nice we had to change it into the word that we were going to use.
